Ladbrokes World Hurdle Preview The World Hurdle is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race in Great Britain which is open to horses aged four years or older. It is run on the New Course at Cheltenham over a distance of 3 miles (4,828 metres), and during its running there are twelve hurdles to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. It is the leading long-distance hurdle event in the National Hunt calendar, and is the feature race on the third day of the Festival. It was first run with its present conditions in 1972, when its title was changed from the Spa Hurdle to the Stayers` Hurdle. This version was initially sponsored by Lloyds Bank, and it was subsequently backed by Waterford Crystal (1978–1990) and Bonusprint (1991–2004). The race was moved to the Thursday of the Festival in 1993, prior to which it had been run on either Tuesday or Wednesday. It was formerly contested on Cheltenham`s Old Course, where its distance was 3 miles and 1 furlong (5,029 metres). It was given its current title in 2005, the first year of a new sponsor, Ladbrokes. In 2010, the event has a total prize fund of £260,000.
